Sun, sand, and surf are just a few of the reasons to vacation at Sayulita, Mexico, a quaint, uncrowded, and picturesque fishing village on Mexico’s Pacific coast. One of the gems of the Nayarit Riviera, Sayulita offers outstanding accommodations in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere that effortlessly combines the best of relaxation and adventure. Visitors can enjoy world-class surfing, whale watching, and activities for the whole family, then unwind on secluded beaches, stroll through the town shopping for handcrafted folk art, or dine at alfresco restaurants featuring everything from quick snacks to authentic Mexican cuisine. Sayulita is decidedly laid-back and bohemian, but exciting night life is just 30 minutes away at Puerta Vallarta.

Though Sayulita is becoming a popular vacation destination, it’s still very much a small town with a year-round population of less than 5,000. Nestled in a lush jungle setting with just one road in and one road out, Sayulita is a calm and uncrowded tropical retreat where the surroundings are beautiful, golf carts are standard transportation, and traffic jams are unheard of. Sayulita is proudly LGBT friendly and has a welcoming, inclusive vibe that makes everyone feel right at home.

Whether your favorite vacation activity is surfing, swimming, shopping, or simply soaking up the sunshine, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Puerto Escondido. A secluded and surprisingly affordable beach town on Oaxaca, Mexico’s Pacific coast, Puerto Escondido combines breathtaking natural beauty, world-class surfing, and a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle to create a truly unique vacation destination. Though it remains uncrowded and retains its friendly ambience, Puerto Escondidio features accommodations, activities, and attractions for every taste and budget.

There are several distinct areas within Puerto Escondido, each one offering a different vacation experience. If you love surf, sand, and plenty of action, we recommend Playa Zicatela, the main beach and tourist area. Surfers from around the world are drawn by Zicatela’s amazing waves and vibrant night life. For a more relaxing retreat we recommend scenic Playa Carizalillo, a secluded cove that’s Puerto Escondido’s best swimming beach; the calm waters and serene, uncrowded atmosphere make Playa Carizalillo perfect for families, and it’s also the ideal destination for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. And for superb surfing combined with a very quiet village vibe, check out La Punta, located at the southernmost tip of Puerto Escondido.

The Best Hotels in Tulum

Travelers in search of a truly unique vacation will find it in Tulum, Mexico, a quiet town on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Astounding natural beauty, well-preserved history, and some of the world’s finest eco/adventure parks combine with a relaxed, laid-back vibe and eco-friendly atmosphere to make Tulum one of Mexico’s top-rated beach destinations. The area’s lush jungle surroundings, crystal waters, and spectacular white sand beaches create an unforgettable setting for romance, adventure, or family fun.

Local attractions include the Tulum Ruins, a renowned coastal archaeological site where the walled Mayan city of Tulum stood during the 13th and 14th centuries. Tours of the site are among the most popular local excursions, and history buffs can explore the Mayan empire further at the ruins in nearby Muyil, Coba and Chichen Itza. But the past is only part Tulum’s attractions; nearby Xel-Ha and Xcaret Ecological Parks offer lagoons, coves, caves, and cenotes where visitors can explore the aquatic world, experiencing the thrills and excitement of activities that range from adventure water sports to swimming with dolphins and even flying over the treetops on ziplines.

Though prices have risen somewhat over the past several years, Tulum offers accommodations for every taste and price range. Classic beachfront cabanas remain a popular top-end tourist choice, but the town itself is just an easy walk or quick bicycle ride from the beach, and lodgings there are an excellent and affordable option for travelers on a budget.

The food in Tulum is justifiably famous, with scores of eateries catering to every palate and price range; you’ll find fresh seafood, delicious local favorites, and a surprisingly large selection of international cuisines. Most Tulum restaurants have a very relaxed and casual atmosphere where beachwear is fine, fun is the order of the day, and the emphasis is on delicious dining.

Visitors should be aware that the Tulum Beach area has no municipal electric service and hotels must generate their own electricity. For this reason, air conditioning and TV service are limited, and guests are asked to refrain from using hair dryers and other appliances that make a substantial draw on electricity.
