Catedral Metropolitana

catedral_metropolitana

Catedral Metropolitana is Mexico city’s main church. It is located beside the Zocalo or main square and was built over the demolished Aztec temples in 1573. Construction of this magnanimous structure took about three centuries though it was not quite finished in 1656 when it was dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.  Conforming to the architecture of that time, it has a Baroque-style facade, with a 64-meter high Neo-classsical towers that hold 18 bells.

A serious problem confronted the local government of the city when they discovered that the church, due to the city’s soft clay subsoil, has been irregularly sinking through the years. A careful restoration has been employed to remedy the problem, though because of the cathedral’s weight they can only slow down the sinking but no chance of preventing it. Pilgrims and even regular tourists make it a point to visit the cathedral as part of their devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary.
