Tonina can be found in the state of Chiapas near Ocosingo and boasts of Mayan ruins situated on a hill on the edges of a rainforest. It was only discovered in the 1980s, which is why up to this day archaeologists work double time to excavate the whole area. Among the many features of the place are the scattered structures around the whole area. Unlike the more popular Mayan excavations, Tonina have detached buildings on smaller terraces but was obviously built from the ground up. The Tonina ruins also boast of hidden tunnels, maze-like passageways, unusual architecture and stucco frescoes. Stone carvings also abound in the area. Isolated, it is seldom visited by tourists but I say if you are visiting Mexico and you feel visiting the ancient past, Tonina may be your best bet.
