It’s hard to believe that the Hidalgo Marketplace building was once the Gavira bullfighting arena. Today, the beautiful building, having been redone in 1910, is the central marketplace for Guanajuato. However, the original design held plans for a train station, or so some report. Regardless of the history, the spacious market now holds a bounty of treasures for locals, as well as, tourists.
While the goods at the market are immeasurable, some of the true finds come from local artisans. While not usually considered a craft, flowers are being included since the art of raising gorgeous blooms are truly an art form in Mexico. The marketplace has no lack of stunning in-season blooms to enjoy, especially around Dia de los Muertos.
While Barbie may hold a monopoly of the doll market, the hand crafted beauties found in the Hidalgo Market are simply breathtaking. Each doll is painstakingly made by hand with detailed, braided yarn hair with intricate ribbons woven throughout. While any child would be thrilled with such a treasured souvenir, many fans are the adults who travel back home with this as their charming memory of their Guanajuato travels.
The marketplace itself is an intriguing visit, even if you happen to walk away empty-handed. That, however, is highly unlikely. The above paper butterflies sway in the breeze and are just one example of the many elements that create such a lively atmosphere at the market. It is no surprise that many find themselves drawn back to this Guanajuato treasure chest for no reason other than enjoying a day out.
