The  beautiful bold and bright calendula is a member of the marigold family and is often called a marigold because of the familiarity in color to the tagetes. However, true calendula looks more like a daisy and has long lanky leaves that, even by them selves, are quite stunning. The calendula is also known as a pot marigold. The common name, marigold, comes from the term Mary’s gold which refers to the Virgin Mary. It is often held as a sacred flower because of it’s biblical reference, but also because of its strong healing properties. The flower is believed to be strongest just before fully awakening early in the morning and is often used in home remedies having been past down in formulas from generation to generation.

The plant is found through out many home gardens of Mexico next to the hierba buena and epazote. The fresh young petals are plucked and simmered in oil to make a medicinal infused oil that can then be used in salves, soaps or by itself. Usually, antibiotics are a rare treatment for ear infections of children in Mexico. mexican moms usually reach for the calendula oil and even infuse the oil with garlic for more potency. Not only does it aid in healing, but it soothes even the most fiery inflammations.

Unlike many flowers, calendula is not known for a very pleasing flower scent. Instead, it is the beautiful look in bouquets that lead many to plant this beauty in the garden. It is also a humble flower that grows with little fuss and  worry. The plant survives through most, if not all, of the year and adores living in a sunny place.
