VISITING THE TOWN AND RUINS OF CHOLULA, PUEBLA

Visiting The Most Ancient & Beautful Tunnel Of Cholula In Puebla

Cholula is located 8 Kms. to the west of Puebla city. Cholula is facing the beautiful scenery of the volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Itztaccihuatl. Its foundation goes back to 500 B.C. and since then its occupation has been practically uninterrupted, making Cholula the most ancient alive city of America.

As you arrive to the town, it’s hard to miss the picturesque church situated on a hill top with the spectacular Popocatepetl volcano off in the distance. What’s not so obvious is the fact that the hill in which the church is sitting on is actually the remains of the great pyramid of Cholula, which it’s said to be the largest pyramid ever constructed. When you get to the place, you will only see the big church on top and it will look like if there isn’t anything to see really. The reason is because the pyramid under the Church has been covered with dirt and grass.

These ruins are less impressive than some of the more famed sites around the valley of mexico. exploring the inner tunnels of the pyramid is something that you can brag about when you get home.

Cholula is also well known for its beautiful colonial architecture, mainly the churches and chapels of the most diverse styles which were constructed between the 16th and 19th century. This city of Cholula is also a nice place to enjoy a delicious lunch around the main plaza, which is surrounded by three classic churches.
