Protected by huge mountains and riffs, Tepoztlan stands at the roof of the Tepozteco Mountain within a serene valley in the state of Morelos, which is located at almost 17 kilometers distance from Cuernavaca City and 74 kilometers from Mexico City. The name Tepoztlan comes from the nahuatl tongue and can be translated as The place of the copper axe, in allusion to the weapon carried by Ometochlti-Tepoztecatl, its guardian god.

Tepoztlan welcomes the traveler with the Colonial monumentally of the former Dominican Convent of La Navidad, but also with the stony countenance of the pyramid of Tepozteco, an emblematic indigenous place of worship that stands out for its bass relief inscriptions. The Tepozteco site sits on cliffs overlooking the town.To reach the site, you must climb a trail that leads off the end of the main street, the climb takes over an hour, this is because the Pyramid is about 600 meters above the base of the valley. Stone benches are built into several areas of the temple, and elaborate door Jambs and pillars grace the site, close to the structure are terraces perhaps living areas for the priests or other residents of the site, with a stunning view of the Tepoztlan valley and village.

If you happen to be around the town on Wednesday  or Sunday, you would then be a witness to the tianguis, the legendary Pre-Hispanic rooted mixture of market and fair within which the most assorted kinds of products are sold, bought or swapped. When you visit this small picturesque town, you must also try the ice cream. In this place, they have the best ice cream and of different kinds of flavours you can’t even imagine. Flavours such as avocado ice cream and tequila ice cream, among others.
