EK BALAM ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – YUCATAN

Amazing Temples, Buildings & Tower In Ex Balam Archaeological Site , Yucatan

The archaeological site of Ek Balam is located 114 miles east of the city of Merida in the state of Yucatan. Ek Balam means (black jaguar) in Mayan. This site was a very important city for the Mayan people. Its architecture testifies to the fact the site was an influential city.

The site has a number of small temples, altars, and other amazing buildings. The main and most important pyramid is known as the tower, its size is more or less (100 feet high, 517 feet long, and 200 feet wide) very similar to other Mayan buildings found in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Among these important and big buildings is “The Acropolis”, which is the largest restored building that measures 580 feet across, 180 feet wide, and 96 feet tall. This marvelous palace is made up of 6 levels, and it was an important building because this was where the governors of the city’s population lived. Archaeologist believe it was not built by one person or all at once, but that it took many people and its construction lasted a few if not several years. You can climb this imposing structure, and from the top, you can see all the other structures at Ek Balam, as well as two large hills which are two non-restored buildings.

Ek balam is a very relaxing place because it is never crowded with tourist.  Even though this place is quieter and more peaceful than Chichen Itza, It also has some disadvantages. It is not fully excavated and it does provide the same comfort facilities for the travelers, such as hotels or other kind of lodging. The place does  have a restroom at the site, but no refreshments, so be sure to bring your own. You can buy drinks and food at two small villages that you will pass on your way to the Site. Ek Balam is opened from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and the entrance fee is $4 USD per person.
