Becan: Jewel in the Jungle

Located close to the center of the YTucatan peninsula, Becan is an important Maya ruin site in the Mexican state of Campeche. Ensconsed among jungles and covered by a wild growth of foliage the destination has a poetic intensity which goes beyond its intellectual and architectural significance.

Becan was occupied in the middle pre-Classic period, around 550 BCE and eventually grew to become a major settlement in the late classic period. The population is thought to have decreased around 250 BCE was unknown reasons, but later, around 500 CE another flourishing of the culture and prosperity of the area saw that Becan was a very important regional center, signified in the construction of the surrounding large moat.

The site is close to to the other Maya sites of Chalakmul, Chicanna and Balamku. It was abandoned around 1200, and rediscovered in 1934. Since then it has been a center of attention for tourists and scientists alike.
