To that effect, the country’s economic status among the nations is an important parameter and crucial ingredient in its overall image. Hermosillo, situated in Sonora, is one shining example of a Mexican city that has its roots deeply fixed into economic growth and industry. It is, in fact, one of the country’s most important industrial centers. Despite the fact that its an industrial center, the city is a big draw for tourists with its many museums, impressive buildings and typical Mexican extravaganza.

In the vast Sonoran desert, the city lies on a plain surrounded by desert vegetation on all sides. The only city to provide purified drinking water for domestic use, Hermosillo is a popular stop for tourists who happen to be the road aficionado types. Places in the city worth a look include, among others, the Cathedral de la Asunción, the Plaza Zaragoza, the iconic Government Palace of 1881, and, among the natural wonders, the Cerro de la Campana, a small mountain symbolic of the city. Museums are another of the city’s strong points, and you should definitely visit the Regional Museum, the Museo de Sonora and the Museo de Culturas Populares e Indígenas. All of these museums are sure indicators of the rich Mexican heritage.

And since you have come to Hermosillo, dont leave it without paying attention to the Centro Ecológico de Sonora, if you happen to be a nature lover. The ecological center will satisfy you with its comprehensive collection of 300 species of plants and about 200 species of animals. Also worthy of note are the two important festivals in the form of Fiesta de la Vendimia (the grape harvest festival) and the Feria Exposición Ganadera e Industrial (The exposition of livestock and industry). You’d be amazed at how much Hermosillo can offer you. Just visit it.

The Ecological Center of Sonora offers a wonderful collection of flora and fauna from the four ecosystems found in the state of Sonora. The park includes exhibits representing the natural environments of mountains, deserts, grasslands and the Sea of Cortez.

Cactus at the Center

CC photo by Nearsoft courtesy of Flickr)

The 2400 acre center holds over 300 species of plants and 200 different animals. While the center focuses mostly on the four Sonoran eco-systems, there are animals from all around the world for visitors to enjoy. The end of the semi-rugged trail relieves visitors with a cool and refreshing greenhouse which offers shade and a moist tropical environment highlighting tropical species of plant life.

Look closely in the trees

The area can get quite hot, especially in the middle part of the day. Visitors should make sure to bring plenty of water or other re-hydrating drinks. It is also important to wear plenty of sunscreen and dress accordingly with coverage for the head and loos fitting clothes that allow the body to cool itself.

Monkey house

The admission price is $10 and the center is open Wednesday through Sunday. The hours are seasonal with shorter days in the winter from November 1st through March 31st. The center is open from 8:00 to 5:00 during these months with extended closing of 7:00 during the months of April 1st through October 31st.

Javalina exhibit

The center is a wonderful way to learn about Sonora’s various eco-systems, as well as, the amazing animals from around the world. It shows the small environment movement that has started in Mexico and is spreading both through education and through ecologically-minded tourism. A visit is perfect for family travel and the price of admission makes it an affordable indulgence.

It just doesn’t get better than coffee with a side of pan dulce, fresh from the best panederias in Mexico. Above, a shop has been set up outside a train station in Chiapas offering coffee, pan dulce, arroz con leche and tamales. That’s the type of breakfast that will keep you smiling all day. Pan dulce has become one of the most common breakfast items and after dinner treats that throughout Mexico, and now, even extending into the U.S.

Choosing pan dulce (CC photo by Dolanh courtesy of Flickr)

Each town in Mexico seems to specialize in its own specific type of pan dulce. Like many foods of Mexico, towns and even families, put a special twist that differentiates their culinary treat from one another. Here, locals choose their favorites at a bread stall in Zihuatanejo in Guerrero, Mexico.

All shapes and sizes (CC photo by Fd courtesy of Flickr)

Regardless of which town you visit, the recipe for Pan Dulce is simple. A sweet yeast bread that comes in varying shapes and decorated with many different toppings. Colorful dessert toppings include the traditional conchas with bright pink, brown and yellow topping to pan dulce with a simple sugar coating or rainbow sprinkles. Even the simple mantecadas (shown below), which lack a topping, are one of the richest and most decadent breads you’ll ever experience.

Up close with mantecada (CC photo by El_Enigma courtesy of Flickr)

From Hermosilo to Puebla, and everywhere in between, pan dulce can be found in some form and is bound to be delicious. A must have with a side of coffee or hot chocolate, Pan dulce is perfect as an after meal treat or a simple breakfast food. When in Mexico, add pan dulce to your shopping list and indulge in this gorgeous sweet bread.

If you wish to travel to a beach city in Mexico but you don’t want to pay top dollar for you hotel or resort package, the Mexican city of Guaymas can help you reach your goal. Guaymas is a port town on the western part of Mexico, located between the cities of Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregon.

Besides the beach, Guaymas has a lot to offer. A few times a year, Guaymas is home to a couple of the biggest festivals in Mexico. The city, which is over 300 years old, has a lot of historical sites including museums and religious buildings. In the water, you can enjoy everything from skiing to whale watching. There is also a ferry that connects Guaymas with the Baja California city of Santa Rosalia.

Since Guaymas isn’t a hugely popular tourist destination, it’s not surprising that the prices for hotel and resort accommodations are inexpensive. Rest assured that even though you won’t be paying a lot of money, the hotels and resorts in this city are extremely nice.

Armida Motel offers comfortable rooms, a friendly staff and a decent amount of amenities for a very reasonable price. It’s also located in a convenient part of Guaymas, with many shopping areas and restaurants nearby. The beach is also within walking distance.

Hotel Playa de Cortes is located even closer to the beach and has gotten good reviews in the last few years. Even though this hotel is relatively old, it has been kept up nicely. Hotel Playa de Cortes is in a safe part of town and is a favorite among tourists from the United States.
