Mountains and canyons have their own special aura. Amazingly, they inspire awe more than perhaps any other natural concoction there is on earth (except perhaps a high rise waterfall). Due to this awe, mountains are often the tourist attraction for the tranquil seeking mob of our generation. If anyone is fed up with the ways of the world and it’s devastating intricacies, the mountain is the ultimate go-to destination. Since you, dear traveler, are in Mexico for a vacation, might we suggest a canyon for you? The copper canyon it is, and no, there is no copper here.

Situated in the state of Chihuahua, the copper canyon gets its name from its walls, which appear green in color. At some places, it is deeper than the grand canyon and flourishes in a wide variety of flora and fauna (photographers alert!). Like the Holbox Island, this place too is well secluded from metropolitan stuff and what you get is pure nirvana in the form of raw mother nature at it’s best. The village Creel is the highest point of the canyon and stands at about 8000 feet. Guaranteed, views from there are breathtaking and euphoric. Life is traditional, simple and old school. Worth a visit to the locals.

Do some mountain biking, have some much needed hiking, enjoy a bit driving or climb atop a horse to do some riding. Its almost poetic in this form, and at the canyon, you almost become a poet, bathed in the glory of mother nature. The smell of fresh air and the awesome sense of belongingness to the region. That’s what the Copper canyon promises. And with the promise, you get those valuable insights to life, almost philosophically. Don’t just read our advice. Visit the canyon and find out for yourself.

Mexico is a bird watcher’s paradise and is the home to over 1000 of the world’s 8000 species. These are incredible numbers, and not lost on bird watching travelers around the world.

Bird’s have long held a prestigious position in Mexican mythology.  For instance, it was believed when a soldier died he became a hummingbird and went to live in paradise in the sun. Birds were used to depict time and some were even considered to be bad omens. On ancient Aztec and Mayan pieces of art, birds were always present and symbolic of many things in their day to day life and beliefs.

There are many vacation tours designed especially for bird watching. For example, Puerto Vallarta is the home for over 300 of the 1000 species.  In this area, you will be able to see birds that live by the ocean, in the mountains, and in the valley. Daily tours can be arranged at most of the larger hotels and resorts. In La Huerta a tour is available to view a wide range of tropical birds from inside a canoe. Tours in Villas Buena Vida and Rincon de Guayabitos are walking adventures where you can set your own pace.

This is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, a day, or an entire vacation. There are many books available to help you plan any type of session you want, and it is recommended that you always have a plan! Enjoy and learn, there are so many exotic and native birds just awaiting you and your binoculars.

Piedra Volada translates to “flying rock”. The reason for the name is not really know, although some creative ideas have floated around. What is known, however, is that the area is absolutely breath taking with stunning landscape and beautiful weather.

The valley (photo by Izennen courtesy of Flickr)

During the wet season, the gorgeous area offers a bonus with one of the world’s largest waterfalls. The falls can only be seen from a moderate distance, but are the largest in Mexico and the eleventh largest in the world. When they run, it is off Candamena Canyon in the Copper Canyon area of Chihuahua, Mexico.

The rock seems to hover or be thrown (photo by Izennen courtesy of Flickr)

The great thing about Volada is that it has landscape to meet all hiking levels. There are trails for beginners, as well as, more advanced treks for more expereinced visitors. The area offers a supurb collection of flora and fauna with enough plain space to make camp if an overnight suits your visit.

Gorgeous country (photo by Izennen courtesy of Flickr)

The area around Piedra Volanda is strickingly beautiful and travel-friendly. The falls were only recently discovered in 1996 although there are ruins of mining camps and other proof of man enjoying this spectacular area. There are several tours that venture into the area or many choose to make their own way, however, it is usually better to travel with locals who know the area. Piedra Volada is definately worth a camp out in order to fully appreciate the beauty of its night skies and early morning daybreaks.
