Misa de Gallo
A tradition that was passed on by the Spanish people, Misa de Gallo is still religiously observed by the Mexicans. The Misa de Gallo which means Rooster Mass is celebrated upon the arrival of La Posadas or the procession. Although the term refers to the actual mass during the early Christmas morning, there is a midnight mass that goes on for 9 days. The 9 days signify the 9 months of pregnancy of Mary. Catholics have been accustomed to observing 9 days of prayer or novena prior to Christmas day itself.
On Christmas Eve, families normally forego sleep or sleep after midnight to participate in the Misa de Gallo. It is after the mass when the families head back to their respective homes to resume the festivities of the holidays and to feast on the grand feast otherwise known as the Noche Buena.
