January 5th marks the celebration of the La Noche De Los Reyes Magos, otherwise referred to as the celebration for the Three Kings or the Three Wise men. History tells us that the Three Wise men went to the manger where Jesus was born in order to pay homage to the child king and to honor him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Traditionally, the Mexicans are known to celebrate this holiday by getting together and feasting over a Rosca de Reyes with hot chocolate drink. Rosca de Reyes is a huge, oval bread that has a plastic baby Jesus inside. Each gets a portion or a slice of the bread and whoever gets the baby Jesus will be hosting the get together for the day of Candelaria which falls on February 2nd, or the 40th day after the death of Jesus. Those who will be fortunate to get the baby Jesus will invite everyone and will be tasked to serve Tamales on the day of Candelaria.
