This important ancient Mayan site located on the east coast of Yucatan is found approximately 15 Kms. south of Tulum and 90 Kms. south of Cancun. The Archaeological site is situated around a fresh water lake called “La Laguna”.
Because of its location on the coast, This city was an important trading place. Muyil is also one of the oldest cities found in the north part of the Yucatan Peninsula and it was probably one of the cities inhabited in the pre-classic era. However, it was probably not until the post-classic era that the city expanded to its maximum size.
There are a few important buildings that you can find here. The castle is one of them and it is the highest structure at the site, which also shows architectural features that reveal the influence of the Peten region. Most of the buildings found in the place retain their original wooden lintels above their entrances, as well as traces of Maya blue and red paint on their walls, especially the temples. This Mayan site is still mostly covered with vegetation. however, there are 75 temples in the main complex waiting to be uncovered. Archaeologists are still working on some of them.
Again, one of the most notable buildings at Muyil today is the remains of the 56 feet castle which is one of the tallest on the Quintana Roo coast. During excavations of the castle, jade figurines representing the moon and fertility goddess Ix Chell were found. This archaeological site is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and you only have to pay $4USD to get in.
