Things to do in Mexico: Visit The El Pachan

El Panchán is for travelers who love nothing more but to go hiking in the Mexican rainforest. Located to the center of Palenque’s alternative scene, the Pachan has quite the bohemian atmosphere and is perfect for campers and those who would love to ‘rough it’ outdoors. It’s also a favorite site by many archeologists or anthropologists.

The site is rustic and has many spots you can explore, including a meditation temple, a rippling stream and a temascal or a hot spring that has been there since the pre-Hispanic era. The El Pachan is one of the most visited places in this area and is also a preferred spot for many foreign exchange students who would love to wander and get to know the roots of Mexico deeper.

The Maya Exploration Center is nearby this area, which is why many students are familiar with the Pachan as there are lectures here, as well as showing of documentary films.

As for accommodations, don’t expect a place where there’s five star facilities because the El Pachan is really more for campers than for tourists going on a relaxing holiday. At best, guests will have to stay in cabanas fit for accommodation of groups.

There is no electricity in many of the areas, so a lot of the conveniences of staying in a hotel is absent here.
The restaurants here are mostly open air and there are few local bands that play music. Food served at these establishments are nothing fancy as well.

However, for a different kind of experience, where you get to enjoy most of what nature has to offer, El Pachan is tops when it comes to exploration.

Low-cost Mexican Airlines – Flights on a Budget

All over the world, low-cost airlines are all the rage for travelers. I still love to brag about how I flew a few years ago in Europe from Paris to Stuttgart for a measly 29 EUR!! Yep, I’m fascinated with looking for great airline deals to include on my travel plans.

Mexico does have some low-cost airlines that offer great deals for traveling around the country. As you may know, there is all but one passenger train line operating in the country. I will tell you about that in a later post.

The most known low-cost airlines in Mexico are Volaris, Interjet and Vivaaerobus. This is a nice travel tip to know, since we travelers use to search for flights using tools like Travelocity, Expedia and so. These airlines DO NOT show on the results when searching on those sites. Instead, it is best to go directly to their websites and browse their routes and special rates. There is one search engine for flights that will include Interjet, it’s Despegar (www.despegar.com.mx). Vivaaerobus (www.vivaaerobus.com) is the fastest growing low-cost airline, they do have excellent deals and their service is reliable, although, as expected in these types of cheap flights, don’t expect courtesy drinks or meals. Volaris is the low-cost airline that offers connections to and from the US thanks to their partnership with Southwest. You may hear of other so-called “low-cost” airlines, but they are just an extension of the major ones, like Aeromexico Connect, Click Mexicana (at this time, they are not in operation) and Aeromar (they cover small cities with usually small aircraft, but they are quite expensive). American Eagle already has some flights to Querétaro, Veracruz, Morelia, Mazatlán, Aguascalientes, León, Guadalajara and others.

As you can see, it is easier every year to fly into Mexico without having to pay for huge flight tickets!

If you are going to Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Yucatan Peninsula, and Cancun, you would need to take a ferry ride. Passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen is the only ferry that provides all four destinations.
