Jaguar: the King of the Jungle

800px-panthera_onca_at_the_toronto_zoo_2

The jaguar has fascinated the mexican people since pre-historic times. The Mayas, Olmecs, Aztecs, and all the other peoples that have inhabited the land have attached great mythological and religious symbolism to this mighty beast, and the creature still remains a manifestation of the Mexican spirit with its noble form, powerful body, and indomitable spirit.

The Jaguar has the most powerful bite of any animal in the feline family. It is stocky, with thick bones and sturdy build, suited to its task of capturing all kinds of prey with ease and ruling the jungles. It is an apex predator, meaning that its only real enemies are human beings and destruction of its habitat by human beings.,

The Jaguar was also a major theme in pre-Columbian art. It was depicted in the were-jaguars of the Olmecs which is today believed to represent some kind of animal-human hybrid among native tribes.

First Empire: Birth Pains of the Nation

emperor_agustin_i1

mexico began the fight for independence in 1810, but that was achieved only in 1821. In the end, when the nation succeeded in that goal, there was little agreement on what form of government the new nation would have. The landed classes mostly favored a continuation of the previous system with new leaders and rulers. Liberals, influenced by masonic ideas, were more interested in a republic and the new principles of liberty and enlightenment where people ruled themselves.

The eight month long First mexican Empire was created in this atmosphere. The Mexican Congress chose Agustin de Iturbide, a general of the Independence War, as the new emperor, but Iturbide did not prove shrewd, flexible, or authoritarian enough to maintain himself in this role. After being dethroned, he was exiled to Europe. When he came back in 1824, he was first greeted in applause and cheers, then arrested and imprisoned. Finally he was executed by a firing squad.

Mexico Divided: The Republic of Yucatan

600px-republic_of_yucatan_flagsvg

The early decades of the mexican nation were turbulent and full of tests and perils. The conflict with France, with the United States, civil wars, corrupt and opportunistic politicians with little care for nationalism or the future of the country made these early years arguably the darkest of mexico’s history. On the other hand, some of the greatest legends of heroism were also sung during this time.

The Republic of Yucatan is a mix of the two aspects. At a time when Mexico was forming its national identity, separatism wasa threat to the nation’s existence. Between 1841 and 1848, this region of the nation existed more or less as an independent nation at times, although efforts by the central government to reinstate its sovereignty were not lacking.

Andres Quintana Roo, whose name is given to a state today, played a major role in preventing bloodshed and establishing the formal relaitonship between the central government and the revem state in 1841.

Nueva Espana: Spanish Rule in Mexico

750px-flag_of_new_spainsvg

Viceroyalty of New Spain was the official name of mexico and surrounding territories during the long rule of the Spanish crown. Acquired through conquest, and assimilated through religious conversions the territory was exploited mercilessly by the Spanish, receiving little benefit beyiond the rudimentary foundations of education, and a backward paradigm of givernment.

The viceroyalty existed between 1521 and 1821, or for 300 centuries. Although during this long period there were a number of revolts, on the whole Spanish rule was remarkably strong and stable. Beyond all the benefits of authoritarianism and violent rule in keeping a subjugated people under check, the role of the Catholic clergy in incorporating Nueva Espana into the territory can never be underestimated.

Spain surrendered Florida to the US, and in !821, the mexican revolution put an end to their rule over this nation. The remains of the empire would be governed by Spain until the end of the 19th century, when the Us decisively finished of Spain’s colonial empire.
